There is so much cracking music out there, and these days it's increasingly hard to classify. I listen to everything my hairy little ears can manage and I try and play as much of the good stuff as I can. My sets are a mixture of hip hop, funk, breakbeat, disco, jazz, house, soul, rare groove, pop and anything else that sounds good.
Bad mouthing the competition is never a good look but it amazes me just how many serious and devoted DJs there are that seem to have a knack for finding bad music in amongst all the incredible talent that's out there. Or play sets where every tune sounds the same. I like music that goes somewhere basically. However good the tunes, a set should make you feel a range of emotions, not just one, or you get bored and switch off. One minimal stomper after another for 90 mins is like watching a film that is one long punch up...you kind of like it but after a while you're thinking about something else.
